Writing Rituals

If you’re still struggling to write and you already know what you want to write about, but doubt still asserts its control over you, then it will help if you develop writing rituals.

I know the term “writing rituals” runs counter to the idea that we shouldn’t follow strict, traditional rules, but actually that’s not the case at all. Writing rituals are widely used by almost every type of writer. And many prolific writers who get into their writing zone rather easily typically use them even if they never take a moment to notice them. Let’s be honest, all writers want to write frequently, every day if they can, but if we look too closely at the reasons we don’t write every day, we might jinx ourselves, lose our focus, or even lose our inspiration.

However, writing rituals make writing easy, a habit that comes on its own. The two hardest parts of writing is arguably starting and finishing. When I actually started finishing writing projects, I noticed that I had made writing a part of my daily routine. This routine or ritual has been the ultimate key for me to finish what I start writing. I am not talking about a step-by-step program. Since every writing project is different, I don’t buy into any step-by-step writing program. They’ve never worked for me anyway. However, if I follow my daily writing rituals, I know I am going to write tomorrow, and this knowledge ultimately helps me get into the right frame of mind more quickly so I can focus on what I want to write about.

If we really think about it, too much of our time is often spent figuring out how we’re going to find time to write or hoping that the urge to write will soon come over us. Rituals take away the guesswork and allow for the actual process of creation to develop instead of wasting valuable time.

Professionals in nearly every profession and sport use rituals, and most of us have rituals we follow from the very moment we wake up in the morning to the time we go to bed. Our rituals help us stay on track to do the things we need to do every day. If you can incorporate your writing into your daily rituals you will find it much easier to write every day.

I have particular rituals I use to keep myself writing on a daily basis. In the morning, I get up, brush my teeth and take a shower. Then I head to the kitchen where I know I can find hot coffee. My wife is so awesome she makes the coffee every morning! I pour myself a cup and then go directly to my writing desk. Since I have started writing on a daily basis, I make it a point to wake up at least two hours before I go to work or do errands. These two hours become my writing time, and I guard it carefully. If I only have an hour, I feel too crunched for time and cannot find the inspiration I need.
